Switching to a Credit Union Good for Charlotte?

I was standing in line for my morning cup of coffee last week when I heard a lady in front of me say "I am shutting down my Bank of America account and switching to a Credit Union". I spent the last week thinking about it off and on and doing some research.

In the last few months there has been a lot of press surrounding Occupy Wallstreet, Bank Fees and a Mass Exodus from Large Banks to Credit Unions. Can this be good for the local Charlotte economy?

Like it or not Bank of America has been a corner stone in the growth of Charlotte. They have their fingerprint on everything from local jobs to professional sport teams. Bank of America employees about 280,000 people nationwide with a large percentage living in the Charlotte area.

According to reports over 650,000 customers have pulled their accounts and money from large banks nationwide. Totaling an estimated 4.5 billion dollars. I am sure a large chunk of that is from Bank of America.

I do not know where I stand on this subject as of yet. I do know that there are hundreds of great credit unions nationwide and in the Charlotte area. I also would think we as Charlotte residents would want Bank of America to stay in business.

What are your thoughts? I am stuck on this one but maybe you have the answer.
