There’s been a lot of talk about Apple lately, both for happy reasons and for more melancholy ones. On the one hand, of course, there was the announcement of the new iPhone, to say nothing of the new iPhone operating system—and, well, with Christmas shopping season coming up, there’s obviously going to be plenty of buzz about iPads and the like. Factor in the sad passing of Apple founder Steve Jobs and you have quite an Apple-related frenzy. In a city like Charlotte, which already has an Apple fixation, this frenzy is only accentuated.
And it might not stop any time soon. Recent reports from the Charlotte Observer indicate that Apple might be bringing new facilitie ...

All Panther fans know that getting to the game early is the best way to get a great parking spot. How do you know that you are paying for a legitimate lot? Though the gatekeepers who collect your money at the entrance of the lot may seem to be the highest authority when it comes to game day parking, you may be surprised to know that some people have had to pay for their spots twice.
Dirk Dachs is a Panther fan and member of the Monroe community who always parks in the same lot Uptown. He got a big surprise at the last game, then, when he reached his car and found an orange parking ticket on his windshield.
When pulling into the lot that morning, he had paid his ten dollars ...

We are all aware of the rampant unemployment rates that have taken over the job market across the country. The need for more jobs in the city of Charlotte is something that its residents are painfully reminded of every day—especially its unemployed residents.
Since this time last year, thousands of people have lost their jobs in the state of North Carolina. At 10.5 percent, the unemployment rate for September is much higher than many people would have hoped. Though the job market has little to offer residents of the Queen City, many of the community's members have dedicated themselves to using all of the resources available to find a new job. The unemployment office, which is ...

They call her the Queen City, so it’s probably not too surprising to learn that Charlotte, North Carolina has a certain thirst for glamour and prestige. Residents will be getting a generous helping of glitz and celebrity next year, then the Democratic National Convention comes to town—and with it, one assumes, the President and many other high-ranking government officials. But that may be just the beginning of Charlotte’s time in the spotlight, at least if bids to host the Olympic Games prove successful.
The notion of Charlotte hosting the Olympics may seem a little far-fetched—and the folks who conceived of it know that well. But that hasn’t stopped th ...

There are a lot of new residents moving into the Queen City area—not physically, but virtually. All of a sudden, the area seems to be a major geographic locale for corporate data centers. Just recently, Facebook opened the first of its three enormous data centers in nearby Rutherford County. The state-of-the-art facility, once completed, will house profiles and photos for Facebook users all over the East Coast, as well as the entirety of Europe. The new Facebook building didn’t bring very many jobs to the area, but in terms of prestige, you could do a lot worse.
And now, there’s another big data center coming to the area—or, to be more accurate, expanding its ...

It’s amazing the many different uses for digital technology that you’ll run across, oftentimes popping up in the most unexpected. You probably don’t need to be informed of the myriad ways in which social media and mobile devices have infiltrated the worlds of commerce and marketing, for instance. But you might be a little surprised by some of the ways in which technology is being used to fight crime.
Some of these methods, of course, are more effective than others. A few cities have experimented with automated traffic cameras; basically, if you speed through certain intersections, the cameras will catch you and you’ll get a ticket in the mail. These methods h ...

Has all the hype of the NFL season and Cam Newton made us forget that we actually have a NBA team? We love Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers at the TheQueenCity.com. We also love NBA action and the Charlotte Bobcats.
What is going on with the team and the NBA season? Well so far it does not look good for the 2012 season.
Yesterday the NBA announced that the entire 114-game preseason schedule has been canceled because a new collective bargaining agreement has not been reached with the players association.
The Charlotte Bobcats seemed to prepare for a season long lockout by cutting big contracts such as Gerald Wallace, a long time favorite in Charlotte. Turning th ...

To say that Bank of America is a company that inspires consumer confidence and warm and fuzzy feelings would be a gross exaggeration. Indeed, the financial giant is a target for controversy and negative feedback, especially in light of recent happenings.
Just last week it was announced that the bank would begin instituting a $5.00 monthly fee to debit card users. What’s more is that consumers are already charged $8.95 if they actually go into a branch and consult with a teller. This sparked outrage both among consumers, who are already cash strapped in a bad economy, and in the halls of Congress. Politicians decried the move, stating the bank was ...
