The implementation of mass transit in a new city has always been marked as a turning point in that location’s history. With this transit comes the ability to easily access any area of the city, to travel beyond the city’s boundaries and into the suburbs, and to feasibly live and work in two different locations. With the capability of easy transit, vehicles such as trolleys also bring about economic growth, something that the Queen City experienced after its first trolley system was integrated into the daily lives of its residents. Charlotte, North Carolina is a city that envelops many different neighborhoods and the Charlotte Trolley is the very thing that brought them all together.

Charlotte Trolley did more than simply bring people to work, to stores, and back to their homes when the day was through—it brought people themselves together. The Queen City experienced a boom of integration between the several social classes with the opening of the trolley system, as individuals that couldn’t afford cars could often afford public transit. This allowed people of all of the social classes access to the transportation they needed to enjoy the city center. Charlotte, North Carolina’s social and economic landscape was changed forever by the Charlotte Trolley.

Today, the Charlotte Trolley Powerhouse Museum preserves the best of the Queen City’s first mode of public transportation. The trolleys themselves are still running for visitors to enjoy, thanks to the grants, gifts, and sponsorships that many generous individuals have bestowed upon Charlotte Trolley, which is a 501(c)(3) organization.
